Perhaps not to you personally, sir, but you didn't start the thread. I appreciate the responses.

Thanks PurpleGorilla. I think I was hoping someone would just say 'Nah, you're a contractor, ***** 'em if they don't like it' but I suppose the wisdom of those who've worked in finance has proven that won't be the case.

I would go with suit for Day 1 and check out the situation.

I, also, work in Finance and have always largely worn what I like, including smart jeans, regardless of company dress policy. However I'm always in a smart shirt, shoes etc.

People have questioned it, in jest, in the past, I have been honest and said I don't consider those rules are for contractors. YMMV, though, I'm not saying that this is for everyone.
The strange thing it is only the junior people that will mention it, not the senior stakeholders I regularly deal with.

However, if I was going to the Far East, new office, new culture etc. I would start with the smart approach and go from there.

The culture in Asia generally is that you are judged by your appearance and age, seniors are deferred to. If you want to be respected dress smartly and conservatively.

True enough. Even more reason why I dont understand how a contractor can moan about it? Its not the end of the world to follow a clients dress code....

You surprise me, you seem to moan about, absolutely, everything else.

Large retailer in Bradford still insists on ties and top button fastened. Like being at school.

Never wearing a tie again if I can help it, but I did accept that if I'm going to do the contracting thing I need some long-sleeved shirts and no jeans outside of dress-down day. Still wear my Docs with green laces though - manager actually gave me respect for that which was nice. Oh and for thread relevance I work at a bank.

You mean you dress like a student.
