Smart casual is usually best bet I find for most clients (i.e. shirt, trouser, shoes, no tie).

First day at financial client, always suited and booted.

After that in CW, you may find that you don't need the tie (in suit pocket by 10am).

Again, bow to the knowledge of those on here that have experience in the Far East, but I'd certainly say suited and booted over there initially too. I've worked in other industries and felt overdressed in jeans and a polo shirt, but finance still has standards.

I think you're confusing standards and morals.

Now that's far too harsh, IMO.

How difficult is it to wear a simple suit with a tie on day 1 and knock the tie off if no one else is wearing one?

I personally wear a two piece on day one and if everyone else is wearing a suit, I wear my best 3-piece from day 2
