Websites for a contractor using a ltd

    Hi,

If I read the websites that have websites to sell, according to them a company website is essential.

No surprise there, as they want to sell me there's.

    But are they essential ?

I get most of my contracts from the main job sites and agencies. So was wondering how by having my own business website will benefit me.

I'm curious to know how many others contracts have sites of there own, and do you gain business from them ??

    Cheers

It's not essential, but if push comes to shove it might help with IR35, as would having business stationery. It all goes to reinforce the idea (and mindset) that you're an independent business willing and able to get your own clients. Regardless of whether a website does actually get you clients, the point is that it could, so that helps.

Which reminds me, I need to work on mine, it's currently residing in the "2/10 could do a lot better" pile.

Wow! So the difference between a 'proper business' and a disguised employee is a website is it?

No, but show me a proper business that doesn't have one.

maybe thinking further ahead than the next step could be to your advantage.

Has anyone ever got off an IR35 charge by dropping a business card on the taxman?

I am curious to know though .... has anyone picked up any work purely by having a website? Or been contacted by a potential client?

Yes. Our main business is real-time embedded software but we also do website design and PC repairs which are all advertised on our website, and we get the occasional bit of work from it.

Not enough to keep us going, but it does make a difference.

Ok ..... i get that. My main business is selling a software product I wrote and 99% of my sales comes via my website.

I also pick up bespoke customisation work from the site, but that is all related to the product.

I was curious to know whether any "traditional" contractors ( i.e. someone who usually goes into a client site to carry out a specific task/project/contract and generally works through an agency ) has actually got a site that has generated any work ( or at least any leads ).

Lots and lots of small businesses haven't got a website and are perfectly fine without it. Website is for attracting clients and giving them information about the kind of work you do or servies provide. Now, as a contractor, you rely on agents to find you work, so if all the agents know you and have your details in their databases, there is no one left to inform or advertise to.
