I have one, as I had hoped it would generate some leads, but it never has.

I've never needed it to though, as so far I've not had problems getting contracts.

Nice to have, but not essential.

Excellent. However you seem to be in a minority!

The reason I asked the question is because this thought struck me.

The vast majority of people are used to searching Google for everything in both their private and business lifes. Google is so dominant that non-techies think it is the internet.

If I go to Google Maps and type "Pizza takeway near MyTown" - I get a list of the Pizza joints.

But if I type "Java Contractor near MyTown" or "Database freelancer" I get nothing at all. Which seems an odd omission.

IMO most people in said position are googling "agency java contractors" or "database development agency".

You would also need to register your business with google to get it to show up on the map. This is a free service. As is being listed in Yell.

Google's free service does limit you on what your business can be listed as i.e. "Software Company", "Software Store", "Engineering Consultancy".
