Cheers for that. I can imagine their face if they thought I was working then said on xmas eve, nah Im off until the new year.
Wouldn't the sensible thing be to tell them you are off until new year as early as possible? Still got the aggressive attitude to clients I see. Very poor.

No mate. The point is I'm willing to work and I've asked them to confirm they need me. If I planned to be off I would give them the courtesy of letting them know in advance.

My point is they should do the same. i.e. not wait until the week before and then say yes please come in or no thanks.

True, not that long ago when entire towns closed for a week and went en masse to the Victorian coastal resorts, as working patterns changed it's reduced a lot, but not unknown for employers to have fixed leave periods.

Correct, but that includes the 8 public holidays I believe, hence I think the norm is to assume that minimum holiday entitlement is 20 days in addition to public holidays. I probably should be a little more clued up on this!

That's right. I had a nasty shock when I discovered that my 20 days (back in 2005) was actually 12 when you took out the bank holidays.

Happened to me for the first time last year but as it was in London and my train line would have been shut anyway, it was a slightly academic point as I would have struggled to get in anyway.

Didn't you think of asking before you signed?

Happening to me this year from 15 Dec. Thinking of using it as an opportunity to look for a new job !

                  Just happened today.

Been speaking with line manager as late as today and my capability manager for at least 2 weeks about Xmas cover. No problems etc and then an email came out today that people who are being requested to take furlough have been identified and already notified. No problems I thought, I've not been notified.

Get home tonight to check my mails and I got an email this afternoon telling me to take a furlough.

It's why, when recruiting, I advertise our holiday entitlement as 20 days + Christmas & New Years Off, rather than 27-28 days annual leave.
My last permie role, the place shut down between Christmas and New Year, and it came out of the 20 days annual holiday. You got a half day on Christmas Eve for free though. Woo.

Yep, my last two were like that. Though at the second one, we were in a council controlled building and they closed longer than our Head Office so we did get some freebie days.
