    Boredom and keeping busy

A strange question this - how do you guys alleviate boredom and keep yourselves busy?

Quite often I've got nothing to do and those tasked with giving me work (let's call them what they are: Managers) aren't giving me much to do. How do you stave off boredom? Do you actively seek work, if so, how?

In theory it sounds great being paid a daily rate for doing very little but am finding it very boring at the moment sitting in an office all day whiling away the hours. It also raises the question that I might find myself surplus to requirements. Some times I'm getting up and going for a piss just for something to do... help!

    Create a VM and skill-up.

    Simples.

Ensure better rate/salary/$/£ for next job/contract/etc.

Not really a doer in current gig as we don't really have power-level IT access and any request would require a justification.

Doesn't happen as I work on projects, but I'd walk.

The occasional leap into the unknown is a necessary character trait (flaw?) for a good contractor.

C'mon use some imagination. Either setup a home lab with remote access, or set something up in one of the public clouds (MS Azure will do) and skill up

Accessing such a system really wouldn't fly (nanny IT policy) but thanks anyway

Aren't we all IT savvy here?

You bring your own laptop onto site, right? Then invest in a mobile dongle (£15pm + £50 for the dongle from 3), and you have your own unmonitored unfettered internet access. Is there a reason you couldn't do that?
