Two agent rate problem

Hi,

I am hitting the bench in a few weeks so CV is updated etc. Agent called saying a previous client is hiring blah blah asked my rate so I told him my rate based on my previous rate there, so he is putting me forward. Then I get an email from another agent for a role with 50% higher rate. Turns out its the same role but I have already been put forward at the lower rate. I know I have to go with the first agent but wondering if I can now up the rate based on this information?

What information? 50% higher sounds utterly ridiculous so hardly useful information IMO.

Why on earth did you give him your rate based on your old one? You should have put a higher bid in. On one hand you think your rate is ok so not willing to up it but on the other you are tempted by a 50% hike? Doesn't make sense.

Wait till you get gig and then just tell the agent what your new rate will be based on the fact you now know the scope of work and it will cost you £xxx to do it.

Example (not real rates), I was on 500 before at client so I say to agent 550 this time, then I see other agents email at 750-800.

Anyway I sorted it out agent hadn't put me forward yet and will put me in at higher rate.

How much more? And you are ready with your response when he tries the 'Client likes you but only willing to pay xx' IMO you've shown him a weakness he will attempt to exploit.

If it's so easy to get a good bit extra from the same client I would be a bit annoyed at myself for being done over in the first gig as well.

The company has been acquired and this was a few years back. Chillax NLUK im not a newbie.

Seems like a huge jump (not looking at the figures but assume your example equates to the same %ages) This is the he same agent that was offering the lower rate? If so are you sure he's not just saying that to keep you out of the game and ensure you don't go with the agent offering more?... Its not been unknown for that to happen.

The first agent never said a rate he asked me mine, and I never went to the top rate maybe 20% more than original.

To which you replied "my rate depends on what the role entails"? If you quoted a rate knowing what the role required but have now found out you could have gone higher......tough
