Well it makes sense if you think free trade is a good thing. We export a lot of stuff to them, they export a lot of stuff to us, sticking tariffs on in either direction won't be good IMHO, hence it is in both sides interests to agree a free trade deal. If you think it's a bad thing then please enlighten me.

Lots of people are making lots of noise, examples are nutty Tory Brexiteers demanding a hard Brexit, Macron on fishing access, there is quite a long list, read the papers.

      Will eventually happen? Maybe...

How much progress has been made so far, after years of discussion? And how long can the crippled uk fishing industry survive in a no deal scenario?

Serves them right though, those greedy and gullible uk fishermen voted for it.

So surely the better option would be to not leave the EU and continue with the FTA in place...
Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.

we take the fishing waters back from Europe. Then our fishermen have an effective monopoly. Does not matter about the extra tax. 60% of our fishing grounds are used by foreign boats. The French and Spanish do a lot of fishing there. But once they dont have access, they will have no choice, but to import.

Yes French will let boats dock without a fuss

Furthermore, the original Brexit proposal by Farage et all was for a Norway deal and be in EFTA. Fishing was not on the agenda until a a few weeks prior to the referendum. History has now been re-written for the convivence of extremists.

I think free trade is a good thing. You've not explained why it makes sense for both sides to enter a free trade agreement, particularly given the nature of one side's arguments regarding not binding by international agreements.

They don't export that much to us.

Sticking tariffs on would mean it wasn't a free trade deal.

I've not said a free trade deal is a bad thing.

If one google's "Macron fishing access" the top hits are all the Daily Express.

This might be a more balanced article, if you can bring yourself to read it:

One of the many things "they voted for" was not to have to throw their catch overboard because EU 'factory boats' had hoovered up all the allocation for some species.
Once we are finally out of the CFP, UK fish prices will no longer be artificially inflated, so even with tariffs UK fishermen should be able to sell competitively into the EU.
Fifty years of the CFP have destroyed much of the UK fishing industry (much as it was designed to) so is it any wonder coastal communities can't wait to leave it permanently?
