There is surely a minimum "deal" that the EU and the UK must agree. e.g. the UK's commitment to honour and finance any existing arrangements like pensions etc. and the rights of citizens to continue to live in the various countries. What seems to be happening is that both sides have been trying to set out arrangements for the future. Surely that should be a subject for future negotiations. As far as the border sticking point is concerned, what is stopping the UK saying, we will not change anything. You can continue as you do now. Is it the EU that wouldn't like that situation? There didn't appear to be any issues when both the ROI and the UK were not members of the EU. So, would the arrangements that were in place then fit the bill now? Our ROI neighbours have always enjoyed a special relationship with the UK, even to the point that some have dual nationality.

Just think for a second (I know it can be hard for you). UK is out of Europe and free to negotiate any free tariffs with 3rd countries (US, China, etc.). Without a border what is stopping someone sitting in Northern Ireland buying goods from this countries with zero tariff, then drive to Ireland (being now inside the EU economic zone) and resell these goods (bought free tariff) to the rest of the EU, don't you see a clear advantage over every other EU member!?!!?!? How can someone not understand this....?

On the other hand how would UK control the entry of EU migrants?!? They would still be free to move at will to Ireland, then all they have to do is drive to Northern Ireland!!!! Or worse migrants from third countries getting a tourist visa to Ireland and then just move and stay in the UK illegally...

I agree fully! Hence we should create a united Ireland. Surely the Irish government would love to take on Northern Ireland? Maybe anyone who feels that strongly about the UK can move there if they like it so much.....

I've not extrapolated it. I, along with many others who were aware of the Irish Border before the referendum, remember sitting in those queues for up to an hour. A good day was if it was less than 15 mins.

For the youngsters out there, the last time there were big queues at the border was during the foot & mouth outbreak in 2001 when every vehicle had to drive through a pool of disinfectant (like walking through the verruca pool outside leisure centre changing rooms)

Not so sure about that. From this side it is clear Brexit fatigue, money been wasted on catering to the Brexit circus, their more likely to just tear up the A50 notice IMO.

So you are telling me that every single border between an eu and non eu country is completely secure and nothing could ever get in and out without anyone knowing.
