Shetland was given to Scotland as a security against the payment of the dowry of his daughter Margaret by the King of Norway. As the Norwegians didn't pay up Scotland annexed the islands
As the Norwegians have plenty of cash, they should be able to pay back with 550 years or so of interest and get Shetland back, which would bring Shetland inside the EEA and Schengen areasComment
