Lorries will be able to drive straight off ferries and Channel Tunnel trains without making customs declarations in the event of a no-deal Brexit, the government has announced.

New guidance for importers and hauliers says firms would file a simplified form online in advance and pay duty later.
Hauliers have warned that no-deal could result in long queues at Channel ports.

The industry said firms would still not be ready for a "chaotic" EU exit - even with these simplified procedures.

They are banking on common sense prevailing and the French realising that it is better for business all round if they just do the same thing on the other side. The EU Commissioners won't like it....but who will really care?

The EU won’t let imports waltz straight through, they might get a few loads of dodgy council cladding and other non-CE marked products.

However, the Calais port manager has already said that he would be operating on a trust system for trucks leaving Calais for Dover - they’ll ask “do you have the correct U.K. paperwork”, and if the truckies say “yes” then they’re on the ferry. As the U.K. requested.

It’s a bit like a lucky dip, who knows what (or who) will be turning up in the UK if there are no checks either side...

It works both ways. Dover Port Authority just has to ask the drivers if they have the correct paper work and on the go onto the ferry they go. Once they are in Calais it's France's problem. if they want to hold them up in Calais and block up with Lorries Calais that's their choice. Roll on lorry park Calais. Can't see that lasting very long!

Should it be any worse than it is now? We’re now a third country, outside of the single market and customs union. A large number in this country don’t trust the EU.

Do you think that checks on goods and vehicles for anything coming in to the U.K. as an independent country should be more, the same, or less, than checks when we were part of the EU?
