Christmas reading: Fintan O'Toole's Heroic Failure: Brexit and the Politics of Pain

An entertaining dissection of the English Brexiteers mentality, including familiar tropes such as the obsession with WW2 and paranoia about the Germans.

Definitely recommended, but not for gammons, who may suffer a xenophobic apoplectic fit.

A favorite quote of mine by him which relates to many people:

And then there’s pig ignorance – the genuine hallmarked, unadulterated, slack-jawed, open-mouthed, village idiot variety
Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.

Oh I dunno, he rants on about comparing Brexit to punk for a while, and follows that up with this absolute gem:

You can hurt yourself for someone or something. “So,” sings the great balladeer of English self-pity Morrissey, “scratch my name on your arm with a fountain pen. This means you really love me.” For some, marking Leave on the ballot paper in June 2016 was a way of scratching the name of England on their arms to prove their love.
What an absolute Toole. He hasn't got a clue about anything.
His heart is in the right place - shame we can't say the same about his brain...

I suppose if your Prime Minister went to the German Embassy to sign a book of condolence to Hitler, as a nation, you'd want to forget WW2

a tossy remainer and a multi millionaire who avoids tax. He used to be a lefty then he started noticing not all countries were nice to animals or its inhabitants meant to not love this country. even he finally understood.
