I've said it before the second best way to resolve this, is exit of NI from the UK and reunification with the Republic or a special status for NI such as IOM

1. If that happened, would the UK have any duty of care for those who wanted to stay in their homes in Ireland, where they've lived for generations, or should they be forced to emigrate to Scotland/Wales, or just be abandoned?
2. Does the south want the north, with all its associated costs and implications? There may be a strong emotional desire for a united Ireland, but is it practical and affordable?
3. The Tories would lose their coalition majority.

1. No - It should be made abundantly clear that those who stay will become Oirish citizens.

2. Probably not. It certainly can't afford to maintain the NHS in NI so that would go for starters.

I think point 1 is the only one that raises concerns - those who want to stay where they live physically, but do not want to be subjected to harassment/terror from those who would like them to leave.

The idea would also go against the UK government policy of trying to keep the UK together - the Scots will start bleating about wanting independence, etc, and would go against the "will of the people".

Looking at it from the outside, stripping away all emotion, human factors, etc, then a united Ireland would make sense. Asking people to stay in their homes but no longer be in their home country, or forcing them to flee as refugees to another country where they don't have their homes, is not something that should be taken lightly.
