I've not understood why (says the EU) it's for the UK to do the sums and present what it thinks is correct, rather than the EU doing the sums and saying "here, this is what you owe and why".

You won't. The EU want us to do all the legwork so they can find fault with it, probably hoping we'll get so sick of it all we'll come running back to them. They haven't come to negotiate, they've come to protect their project, because we all know what will happen if the UK leaves with a good deal, don't we.

Actually, I don't believe the EU has actually ever given an exit bill figure estimate. Fairly certain the rediculous figures banded around are a figment of the imaginations of the UK pro-Brexit press - publishing ever increasing numbers until people stopped saying 'yeah, that sounds reasonable actually'.

The UK's position needs to be that we will agree to pay what we are due to pay. But there can be no blank cheques.
