Merkel: Europe 'can no longer rely on allies' after Trump and Brexit

Europe can no longer "completely depend" on the US and UK following the election of President Trump and Brexit, German Chancellor Angela Merkel says.

Mrs Merkel said she wanted friendly relations with both countries as well as Russia but Europe now had to "fight for its own destiny".

It follows the G7's failure to commit to the 2015 Paris climate deal, talks Mrs Merkel said were "very difficult".

President Trump has said he will make a decision in the coming week.

"The times in which we could completely depend on others are on the way out. I've experienced that in the last few days," Mrs Merkel told a crowd at an election rally in Munich, southern Germany.

The BBC's Damien McGuinness, in Berlin, says the comments are a sign of growing assertiveness within the EU.

The relationship between Berlin and new French President Emmanuel Macron had to be a priority, Mrs Merkel said.

When has Germany ever completely depended on US or UK?

A great slur on the German people.

Most of Southern Europe completely depends on the Germans though....

I think you've got the jist of it wrong. The UK and US were seen as 'strong and stable' that the rest of the world could look up to, sadly they're now seen as 'crazy as ****' and no-one wants to go near them with a barge pole. HTH.
Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.

Looks like Bundeswehr will have to become the backbone of the new European Army...

Whoever serves in it 5 years will gain valueable German citizenship, you've heard it on here first!

PETER HITCHENS: Put away your pointless troops, PM | Daily Mail Online

Theresa May should get herself a stick-on pencil moustache, some very dark glasses and a white military uniform with lots of medals and a set of fancy epaulettes. If she’s going to behave like a Third World leader, she ought to look like one.

Troops on the streets, indeed. What a futile non-answer to the problem of terrorist murder this is, and what a complete departure from centuries of British liberty.

In all my travels, often to less fortunate parts of the world, troops posted on the streets have been an invariable sign of a society on the skids, and a government that prefers force to thought.
          I'm alright Jack

But Europe is not the EU! Scream the jingoistic Brexiters. Still they do to realise for most Europeans the EU is Europe.

Just what we want an assertive Germany, dominant in Europe. Talk of an EU army.

If I understood correctly you think that the Europeans are ignorants.
