The overall approach being hardball, as May et al. have alluded to for months. Obviously, they want to replicate some aspects of the SM and CU through a comprehensive FTA and they will be seeking a time- and scope-limited transition agreement (that looks nothing like EEA, since May has ruled out ECJ at the point of exit). They don't really want the UK to become a tax haven and to start a trade war, but it's about what you're willing to accept in extremis. Whether it works is anyone's guess (doubtful, perhaps, but the EU is a loose coalition and cracks are emerging on the City and defence already). Regardless, the opposite approach of softball taken by Hamface definitely didn't work.
