You may still need a tax return even if you're PAYE, for example if you had rental income or earned over £100k.
Just give HMRC a call and ask why they wanted one. -
Thanks for the reply, I will phone them , just for a bit worried by the letter lol, iv been Paye for years and never been asked for a returnComment

They're a very high "fee and commission" based company that gets tax refunds on your behalf. I know someone who was charged a small-ish fee of about £100 and a 40% commission on the money recovered. They quite aggressively look at your situation, what you can claim under every unclosed loophole and claim it on your behalf, usually to the extent that it triggers many of the flags for HMRC wanting a proper tax return if you're off their normal radar.Originally posted by LisaContractorUmbrella View PostWho are Rift Ltd and what's your connection to them???
As with everything like this, you're probably going to always be better to do it yourself as their fee is far more than the things you'd miss by not knowing about them. Also, it doesn't half make your tax return a nightmare as you have then to get it to match their loophole based refund calculation and you will probably be quite high up on the "rubber glove without vaseline" audit list at HMRC.Comment

I saw an add from them in the paper, they claimed on my behalf they did take about 600 from 3200, do I just ring tax office then or how do I complete a tax return online and what do I need , thanksComment

You're too late to do a paper return, you're stuck with doing an online one. Easiest answer to you is go to the HMRC Online Portal and follow the new user instructions. You'll be cutting it close with getting your government gateway account in time. I'd strongly suggest getting an accountant to help you if you've complicated your tax affairs by using an aggressive tax refund company. You can do it yourself but even experienced people trip themselves up with the form if they add new complexities, you're jumping right in the deep end and will need all the help you can get!Originally posted by ajk View PostI saw an add from them in the paper, they claimed on my behalf they did take about 600 from 3200, do I just ring tax office then or how do I complete a tax return online and what do I need , thanksComment

A tax return is usually just a reconfirmation of your tax liability and verification that you're up to date with taxes. Many times permanent employees will get a few pounds back from their return. Your complication will be that you've reclaimed money now have to state all that again on your tax return to allow it to tally up at the end. Any significant variances that have resulted in you getting a refund that you miss on the tax return may give you enough naughty points to trigger an audit.Originally posted by ajk View PostI'm just wondering how I would owe any money if have paid tax on all my wages in that yearComment
