Do you think I could ring and explain my situation , what will an audit involve?

I am assuming by last year you mean 2012/13 (i.e. year ended april '13) ?
Is the letter a request for you to fill one in ? (i.e. a notice to file). If so you have 3 months from the date of notice or the normal filing dates. Whichever is later.
The normal electronic dealine for y/e april 13 is 31st Jan. Better get registered.
The link is: HM Revenue & Customs: Register for HMRC taxes and sign up for online services Read it and apply for self assessment. Which you might find here: HM Revenue & Customs: Registering for Self Assessment
Deadlines and penalties are here: HM Revenue & Customs: Tax return deadlines and penalties
Now if they are referring to a prior year then you better just hope this is the request for a tax return. If you are a year late I make that £1600 penalty. Also if any of the tax reclaimed is decided not to be quite correct then expect to repay it and a 100% penalty.

From the website of the people you used it seems they specialise in travel claims. I assume that there service involved them becoming your agent? In this case they would, presumably, have submitted the relevant forms on your behalf to HMRC. You presumably have got your copies so you must what they claimed on your behalf.
For what period did your claim apply?Last edited by ASB; 30 December 2013, 18:32.Comment

They are wanting one from last year ending 5 April 13, when rift claimed for me they did not claim for that tax year they claimed for 08-09 09-10 and 11-12, I just can't get my head around the fact I owe tax when it was deducted from my wagesComment

Yes 12/13 rift did not claim from that year only a few previous years , I just don't understand how I owe tax when it was deducted from my wagesComment

Why do you think they believe you owe tax? They are asking for a tax return so it can be got right.
the most likely thing that will be of concern to them will be your charegeable expenses. And tbese should lead to a refund.
You have told the taxman via your agents that you have some chargeable expenses. Hmrc are, in effect, simply asking you what they are. How else can they possibly know?Comment

I'm probably worrying over nothing , suppose I just associate the tax man with owing money lol, what kind of things will I need to put in my return I haven't got any p45/ 60s or anything like thatComment

You don't necessarily owe any additional tax or NI, what they want is a Self Assessment Tax Return for the period.Originally posted by ajk View PostThey are wanting one from last year ending 5 April 13, when rift claimed for me they did not claim for that tax year they claimed for 08-09 09-10 and 11-12, I just can't get my head around the fact I owe tax when it was deducted from my wages
It's not especially uncommon for employees to fill in SA tax returns, commonly people who rent out houses or invest in the stock market fill them in. Obviously if you didn't know you can make the case of "how can you I late when you didn't send me one?".
If however they did send you the SA form and you ignored it then your argument falls a bit flat.
Contact the tax office pronto, they can be pretty helpful (if you don't get a muppet on the other end).Last edited by TykeMerc; 30 December 2013, 20:35.Comment

Basically if it is money received, and not a gift, the it goes on as income somewhere. If it is expenses incurred it goes on as expenses.
You will need P60's. I don't understand why you don't have them. Alternatively april payslip should have the necessary information.
Can't really comment on your expenses, but travel and subsistence in your job when you had it.
If it was the same job that you made the rebate claim for then you should be able to figure guidance based on what was claimed on your rebates.Comment
