stek's daft question of the day.....

    I know...

But, I booked a holiday with the family, for two weeks starting thursday, now I have a contract somewhat out-of-the-blue and need to curtail my part of the holiday, and return later, can I claim the extra flight costs as business expense? It's valid travel, but I suspect I'd only be allowed to claim from my normal regular address....

    I know....

    No.

Is the expense wholly and exclusively for business purposes, as in related to the trade carried out by the company?

It is not wholly and exclusively. It is you coming home early. Don't see how that can be valid. You are not travelling as part of your work.

In a way yes, if I don't make the flight, I can't perform the contract, it's 100% to enable me to work! Obviously the flight out isn't - but that was booked before I got the contract.

I know it's not gonna be unrealistic (ie stupid) to claim it but it does seem slightly unfair. Playing devils advocate, if I was staying at my place in Spain, got a UK contract, is that flight to UK to perform the contract allowable?

It's to enable you to work, but so are many other things along the same lines - if you didn't have a house you couldn't sleep & then work, if you didn't have a car you couldn't get there, if you didn't eat at weekends you wouldn't be fit for work Monday etc.

The reason you're in Spain is personal, not because you live there. Therefore travel there and back isn't work related I'm afraid.

A large consultancy firm could pay for an employee's early flight and pay him a bonus to cut a holiday short for work, presumably this would be a legitimate expense for them.

I'm guessing it would not be possible for a director of a contractor style ltd, but not sure exactly on what basis it differs from the large consultancy and their employee.

                    Can anyone clarify?
