Of course, that doesn't stop him being a complete hypocrite now.

There must be some potential leverage here, put in the hands of Whitehouse.

I'm afraid this just shows up how malleable the politicians opinion can be, i'm sure there are countless examples like this from many others in the past and in the future to come....doesn't make it right just that's the way some of them act.
