1 SJD offer an excellent service in terms of responsiveness etc.

    2 They offer excellent advice.

3 I like the approach of updating a spreadsheet, as it feels as if I retain the level of control I like.

4 IMHO the spreadsheet is pretty good.

5 The spreadsheet could be improved. Simon, why don't you put a small amount of attention into this and see what improvements can be made?

I've just had a letter from sjd saying "having kept fees steady for the last three years" they are increasing the monthly fee to £110 plus vat.

I'm reasonably happy with the service but I feel at £132 per month I should look for a more economic alternative.

£110 + VAT in letter received today. Do different people pay different fees? What's the differentiator?

Yep, I've had one of those letters too.

I never did get around to changing or attempting to do it myself like I was going to, but £132/month is starting to be steep imo for what I seem to get out of them. And please Malvolio no "a good accountant costs nothing" posts

Think I might be giving intouch a ring on Monday morning. A 15% rise is just a little too much to ask for at the moment imo.

OK, but you might save a whole £500 a year on a key service that presumably works fine as it is by replacing it with one that you don't know. Your call but I totally fail to see the point.

Good accountants sell not just service to do something but also peace of mind, and it's well worth the money - using contract account who visits our office 2-3 days a month at cost an order of magnitude more what SJD charges.

Granted our business is much more complicated but I feel pleased to have great accountant and would not focus on trying to find cheaper alternative, instead I focus on how to grow business instead.
