Paid Too Much Tax When Permie

For the financial year 2010-2011 I am pretty confident I paid to much tax.

Basically I was a permie on a fair salary, so PAYE etc was handled for me. However I only worked for a bout 6 months that year before I went contracting and then didn't start paying myself a salary until this financial year, but instead of using my P45 when I set up the Ltd Co I used a P46.

By my reckoning I over paid by about £900-£1000 pounds, is there away for me to approach Hector to get this back?

If you were contracting last year then you will probably get a request to complete a tax return for 2010-11 in which case the overpayment would show up there.

If not, just give HMRC a call (you'll need your NI number and UTR to hand):

I'm in a similar situation. I worked as permie for month and got a PILON payment too and they overtaxed me.

Theres a form P50 which isnt exactly meant for people like us but I'm sure someone on the board said they'd used it with success. I've just sent mine off to see if they can sort something.

Otherwise, as previous poster says, you might have to wait and do a tax return.

I'm in the same position. Told my accountant I thought I'd paid too much tax last year. He said he'd do my tax return straight away. I've just checked the return, signed it and sent it back to my accountant. Now waiting for Hector to cough up £1500

I always pay an accountant to do my self assessment. They always works out what's best.

Well I don't think I am going to get a self assessment for 2010-2011 as I wasn't a director or took any payments from my Ltd until after the new financial year to try and build up some funds.

If you weren't a director and didn't use a brolly (PAYE) then how did you operate for the rest of the financial year?
