Maybe DR should stand in the next General Election and become an MP. I'd vote for him!

          Tax Return Cleared?

          - hmmm interesting! I had my first Tax Return in the scheme back in 2004 investigated and then cleared by the Inland Revenue; but now they want backdated interest from the same!!

Interesting comment, Hillster, and one that seems to have just ghosted through the ether with no pick-up. When you say that your first Tax Return "was cleared" by HMRC please elaborate - do you mean that it was accepted lock stock and barrel following investigation and you have had no follow-up Closure Notices for this year or what? Am interested to understand this - what appears to be the first ever example of any kind of acceptance of the "arrangement". Did you get any official clearance document?

It's also funny that for a few years whilst using Montp I actually received a tax rebate from HMRC. Hmm. Why would they return money when clearly the scheme didn't work?

I thought that was odd too as throughout the period I got refunds and a penalty for late payment, notifications of over and under payments (business as usual) an indicator that everything was ticketyboo?

                    Hi Hillster

Welcome to CUK and the BN66 about to be changed thread.

When you say that your 2004 tax retrun was "cleared" by the then Inland Revenue what do you mean? ie did IR/HMRC state that they had concluded their investigations and send you an SA302 showing just the self-employed income?

This could be very interesting. You may wish to PM the response.

Admin, please give Hillster PM rights. Thanks

Ok, been through my ir/Hmrc docs and...

The first time I was told that 'Hmrc does not accept that the claims are valid' was May 2007. This was also when they first asked me to consider 'making a payment on account'.

Previous to that, from 2006 (for 2004/5 return) they 'intend enquiring into this return'.

To say they had always rejected the scheme is simply not true.

                      Anyone else got similar dates?

In fact in 2006 they say 'Each year we enquire into some tax returns to check that they are right or because we need further information to understand the figures. We want to make sure you pay the right tax, not too little or too much...' doesn't sound like non-acceptance to me!
