Last month, one evening at 6.30pm I had a visit to my home from a chap dressed in Black Motorbike Leathers and a black beard. he told me he had come to collect back tax from y/e 2008. When I said my MP was dealing with it he couldn't get away quick enough. He gave me his card which had on it HMRC, his name, his mobile number. No address or office where he came from! Was I visited by the HMRC heavy mob? Are HMRC allowed to operate in this way? If I hadn't been there could he have forced his way into my home? Is this Great Britain or Russia we are living in?
This sounds highly irregular!
If this guy is a debt collector he should not be representing himself as "HMRC". If he is HMRC he should have given you a formal Notice of Inspection and the name of the senior HMRC official who has authorised an unannounced visit to be made; also some photo ID.
You do not have to allow anyone into your home against your wishes unless they have a court order of some kind.

Black beard? That was Brannigan then - though he might of used an alias.

Its a very difficult one. If it was the police visiting I would believe it. The police are there to uphold the law - but believe they are the law. I have way too many examples to go into here - but I do have a friend at court Wednesday how has been beaten up during arrest (offering no resistance) who is there on totally false evidence where official procedures have not been followed.
But I have never heard of HMRC sending people round. It is possible that HP is a total twunt and a "friend" is winding him up?

Sorry, that post by someone saying they had a visit from a bearded man in black sounds like one of the General forum's inhabitants on a wind up.
Like a debt collector would just buggar off because someone said his MP was investigating? Debt collectors dont back down this easily and saying your MP is involved wouldnt scare them aware.
