Contractor being asked to complete skills assessment - Advice apreciated

I'm a Business Analyst by profession, set up as a Limited Company and trading for over 2.5 years. I've been asked to comlete a comprehensive skills assessment in order to make an assessment of my capabilities so the company can assign appropriate pieces of work to contractors with the right experience.

My understanding is that I would be exempt from completing such exercises and plus it could be seen to be falling within IR35.

Any advice appreciated.

Its probably worth doing anyway as you should have a skills matrix in your CV as a matter of course. When completing it, I'd ask the question as to whether this would limit the contract opportunities on offer should you want to broaden your experience into other areas. That is, ask how it will be applied and will be be flexible etc.

It wouldn't be a major factor as far as IR35 was concerned - as long as you cover one of the 3 bases of Substitution, Control or Mutuality of Obligation then you should still be fine.

As with anything, if you're on rocky ground already then HMRC would try to use it against you to prove you're an employee. The same could be said for a lot of things though, so it's all the more reason to ensure you have sufficient proof to stop them in their tracks early on.

Depending on your client's awkwardness, you could create one as a standard document for YourCo and send a copy across for them to do what they want. If you have a company website it could go there too.
