    Accountant communication

    A quick straw poll:

    When you email your accountant, how long does it take them to get back to you?
    (Let's assume it's a straightforward query).

    Usually the same working day, and they even have a ticket system to track my queries.

    It doesn't feel like a personal service anymore though, as my once single-faced accountancy firm seems to have evolved into a job-ladder for inexperienced accountants over the past 12 months. The pro-active tax advice is totally missing!

      Normally the same day.

      Recently the service has been slack main reason it seems is that some of the trainees Upton are employing don't like actually doing any work.

        Mine's pretty much same day too. I think mine promise a refund of the month's fee if they don't!

          9 times out of 10 I have to chase mine or follow up with a phone call. Having seen his in box he does not file any emails away and has lots of unred mails.
          Having said that he always give sound advice, eventually.

            Couple of days, have to nudge him from time to time. Saying that he has to do same to me as well so I am ok with it.

              Those whose accountant replies on the same day, does the reply normally come during or right at the end of the working day?

              My accountant is good in that they reply same day but it is right at the end of the day which ordinarily isn't a problem but I currently have a query outstanding and we seem to be going round in circles.

              I replied to an email as soon as it came in today and won't get a reply until the end of the day tomorrow which, in reality means, the query will probably roll over till next week.

              I appreciate why they reply at the end of the day as they would not be able to get any work done but because of this query have found this process quite frustrating.

              (It reminds me of working with 'Bobs' who would purposely reply to your queries at the end of UK working day so you could not pick apart their responses until the next day - cheeky fekkers).

              And yes, I know I can use the telephone, but that's not the point.

                I dont think there is a "norm". every accountancy firm has a different policy. Ours is that we guarantee a reply from the partner (not a junior) within 7 working hours but normally the reply is within 3. We also reply on both saturday and sunday.

                  Trick in that case is not to have set hours. Confuses the hell out of them.

                    When you email your accountant, you should post the question in here - there are as many accountants monitoring this board as there are contractors.

                    Expect super speedy responses from those on here and then you can cross validate the answer with the albeit delayed response from the acccountant you are paying.
