Corp Tax - Notice to deliver a Co Tax Return.

Just had the letter through, not too much sweat as my accountant will deal with it, but the confusing part is:

My end of year was 31/12/08.

    I have to pay the CT by [ 9 months ] 30/09/09

but I have until 31/12/09 [ 12 months ] to file the return - surely I can'y pay my CT until I know how much it is ?
So if I left it to the 30/12/09 would I just pay interest on the money I owe?

    Thanks

Your accountant is supposed to calculate CT and prepare your accounts and your CT return for your sign-off, before the 9 months is up. This is so you can pay the CT you owe by the payment deadline.

The filing deadline is later so that the HMRC can compare your return with what you actually paid and deal with appropriately. So the advice is to make sure your accountant has your CT calculated and that you pay it within the 9 months, or you will pay interest and probably get fined too.

    IMHO.
It's my opinion and I'm entitled to it. www.areyoupopular.mobi

There's no fine on late CT, just interest. The fine is on the late return.

I agree. The different timing of everything (CT is also payable a month before accounts due to Co Hse, personal tax year 6th April, company tax fiscal year 1st April) are nuts. They just do it to annoy us and provide work for accountants. Everything in society is designed to provide work for accountants, solicitors and public "servants".

Absolutely old chap. We must continue to create work for the professional classes who aren't fortunate enough to inherit their income.
