Can anyone recommend any good stuff....I've been looking at Quick Books on the net which seems quick good basic package about £40 going up to hundreds and monthly subscription for payroll.
Looks pretty good. But is it not a bit elaborate (and some might say expensive) for a one man ltd co?
There are two of us, so the fact that it is online and we both can access it at our convenience is worth it IMO. Costs us £250 a year if you pay up front.

In what format does the data go to your accountants? Or do they just have access rights?

My accountant has access. You can also export the data into pdf as a formatted report or into excel.
Edited to say, I create an invoice, it emails it to my client. It then tells me when one is overdue. It calculates my VAT (cash accounting) teels me what to put in the online VAT return. Probably saves me £250 in time a month.

Unless I'm doing it wrong, I find QuickBooks very long winded, e.g.
You enter a supplier invoice (one step)
Optionally add the supplier (if a new supplier)
It doesn't remember that certain suppliers always supply the same thing (e.g. BT = Telephone)
You mark the bill as paid (another step)
Tell it how the bill was paid (Cheque, DD, etc) and when
You reconcile your bank account (another step)
From an accountant's point of view i wouldn' recommend Quick Books, i would go for Sage Instant, as a previous poster said, it is not the cheapest but it is the best and the most widely used.
