    Free softwares

There are certain free softwares available in the market.

    Quick Books Simple Start
    Microsoft Office Expresss
    VT Cash Book

You may give them a try.

Else you can subscribe to some online softwares Kashflow, liberty etc.

    Earnings Tracker

If you're looking for a simple, free, accounting tool that will calculate dividends, corporation tax, retention rate and stuff like that, you could try Earnings Tracker.

It's not a fully-blown accounting or bookkeeping application, so it might not suit your needs.

You can either use a pre-installed online version, or you can download and install the software on a web server.

The software is open source (PHP/MySQL), so you can change it if you want to.

I have an accountant. Haven't really decided their scope as yet.

I just wanted to do as much of the books as I can too. I have 2 months of expenses to bill! and I don't fancy entering the items incorrecty in Sage

    Help
If you are in London, pay a visit to Foyles on Tottenham Court Road, pay £100 on some Sage training notes and learn the product.

With Sage don't you get telephone support? Give them a call and ask them to talk you through it... that's why you paid for a premium product

I tried freeagent too, however their mileage VAT calculation is incorrect which lost some credibility for me. I've fed it back and they are correcting it in the New Year.

From an accountant's point of view i wouldn' recommend Quick Books, i would go for Sage Instant, as a previous poster said, it is not the cheapest but it is the best and the most widely used.

Unless I'm doing it wrong, I find QuickBooks very long winded, e.g.

You enter a supplier invoice (one step)
Optionally add the supplier (if a new supplier)
It doesn't remember that certain suppliers always supply the same thing (e.g. BT = Telephone)
You mark the bill as paid (another step)
Tell it how the bill was paid (Cheque, DD, etc) and when
You reconcile your bank account (another step)

I used to use Quicken and regret ditching it.

QuickBooks takes 5 times longer to do anything.

My accountant has access. You can also export the data into pdf as a formatted report or into excel.

Edited to say, I create an invoice, it emails it to my client. It then tells me when one is overdue. It calculates my VAT (cash accounting) teels me what to put in the online VAT return. Probably saves me £250 in time a month.
