While I was there I signed the petition calling for an immediate general election as well.

As of now this petition has gained 3 times more signatures than any other petition created today. Good news but no reason to relax.

There is no reason why any taxpayer should not sign. S58 is a pernicious piece of legislation brought about in part by deceit between HMRC and the then Treasury Secretary.

The circumstances and reasons for this legislation are not at all "exceptional" as was claimed - in fact you can read how unexceptional they are in the papers every day, about tax avoidance by banks, corporates and Government Ministers and MPs.

What happened here was a group of people acting within the law and now being retrospectively singled out with the prospect of any remaining assets being sequestered by the state for no obvious good reason.

PLEASE forward this to everyone you know for their consideration. If this type of precedent is allowed to stand it could be your tax bill that suddenly leaps after the next budget even though you have done everything you should.

Both myself and my partner began with Montpelier in Mar 2004 and are still with them on the 'new' scheme...

I heard from an accounting friend that HMRC had tried to attack the IoM loan based scheme's but "had not managed to get anywhere". I don't have any further information - it certainly sounds interesting.

I agree. The day we think it is harmful signing a petition is the day we become a communist state.

don't worry, there's no rush to get it sorted...HMRC have 8 years to mull it over and eventually they'll think of something...

once they do, they'll just introduce something in the Finance Act in 2017 and then tax it retrospectively...
