Being as he is labour I am uncertain how much more I could expect from him?

      From Steven Timms Letter

I also announced in the House of Commons a couple of weeks ago that we would act in this year's finance bill to close a tax loophole that had just become apparent - with effect from the date of the announcement. We won't hesitate to act quickly like that whenever we need to.

Anybody know what this new one is? No retrospective closure of this loophole. How bloody unfair! They knew about us for 7 years and did nothing.

Anybody fancy sending him a letter asking why we are being treated differently?

thats a laugh, they couldnt get worse could they. In answer. its apparent to me they dropped a bollock with Montpelier, took their eye off the ball for 6 years, then decided to brass-neck it with retrospection. we are paying a heavy price for HMRC's sheer incompetence and complete absence of shame.

          written to MP

sent DR's letter to Stephen Hammond, MP (Conservative) for Wimbledon today. I have no idea if he will be of any use but nothing ventured etc......

Send a followup letter and insist he asks a question of a Treasury Minister.

I've got one ready if you are up for it.

thats a nice little paragraph to use in the war against HMRC. One rule for us, another rule for someone else...Surely inconsistency from a government agency is not allowed???

I suspect they would just argue that they have learned lessons, taken on board recommendations of the Treasury Committee etc, and have undertaken to close loopholes much faster in future.

Even if you could get them to admit that HMRC made a mistake with our case, they won't back down.

IMO, it is only the impact this will have on several hundred families which could persuade them to retreat from implementing s58. If the fallout could inflict political damage on them (show them up to be callous and vindictive), then they might conclude it is better to mothball it.

When you are dealing with senior Politicians, you need to appeal to their instinct for self-preservation.

I just wonder if it will be effective until a young family with small children appears in the paper in front of a removal van, with their retrospective tax bill and foreclosure notice in hand... but wont it be too late by then?

[QUOTE=GBHuhd;774461]I've just joined up, received the email from Joan Cuddly so have been on the boards, reading all the posts - some very interesting stuff here.[QUOTE]

This is the second reference I've heard to an email from JC - I don't seem to have received anything which is odd as I usually do.

Can somebody PM me the contents?

I don't think this is the same JC that works for Montpelier.
