The largest community grouping of contractors to my knowledge is the PCG with approaching 20 000 members at a guess. Does the fact that the majority of these members i.e. the community not use a scheme not reflect this opinion to a degree?

Oracle, Im more than happy to concede if a factual survey of a majority of PCG members and that majority consider us "arrogant tw*ts" and not paying tax we should, then who am I to argue...

I dont think them not using it proves the above. They may not know about it, consider it too high risk, doesnt suit their own situation. It doesnt mean they are quite as malevolent as Malvolio...

I work on facts not opinions or morals in tax matters.

Montpelier is just one of several schemes I know of, and it is not even the most popular. Based on conversations I've had with users of other schemes, I would guess that there must be at least 10,000 people using these schemes.

Of course, I know a lot of contractors who don't use schemes. Most have stayed Ltd, and have continued to operate outside IR35. The only reason I've ever been given by people for not using a scheme is that they are perceived as being "too risky". No-one has ever said to me they wouldn't use one because they didn't feel that they would be paying a fair amount of tax , or that it would draw unwelcome attention to the rest of the contractor community. The contractors I've worked with have had more important things to worry about over the past 7 years like being out of work and having their rates slashed!!!

Hi All

I am slightly aggrieved that I still have not had any formal response from Montp, despite e-mailing and calling so I am having to rely on your good selves for updates and opinions.

Anyway, as I have not ever had a letter from HMRC despite being with Montp in 05/06, and now from this forum I understand that Montp will be disclosing all the partnership incomes to HMRC who will then be adjusting our SA's to submit demands on us. My question is, should I purchase my CTD now to minimise any interest etc or should I wait until I receive formal notification from HMRC, or the result of the JR?

I intend to do nothing until I hear from HMRC. I know of a few who have heard nothing - even for 05/06(the year under investigation).

If I get anything from HMRC then if I have the money I will get a CTD. At the moment I am paying off my mortgage.

Im sitting it out...I think It does depend how much you owe, and if you are willing to hedge your bets Montp win....

If you can put the money you MIGHT end up having to pay HMRC into an investment product that yields more than HMRC's interest rate you could potentially make some extra..make it work for you rather than them...

Just running a small survey among a group of contractors. All bar one so far agree with me. The one thinks you were being hopelessly naive. Think I'll let it run a bit longer though, just in case opinions change.

yes and Im sure you were totally impartial in the way u described it and didnt put certain ideas or thoughts into their heads...What demographic profile do these people have apart from being contractors

I thought u were staying away from this thread as firstly, it doesnt affect you, secondly you are in a moral argument which is not what this is about thats covered elsewhere, and thirdly you said you were staying away.

All you can debate is the morals of paying this Tax and damage to contractor reputations. Well the horse ran off down the field a long long time ago when it comes to reputations. When we all just paid ourselves £500 per month and the rest in dividends hector didnt like it, oh and Im sure you werent one of those people as you pay all tax due all the time Im sure. The government were on our tails in the late 90's and the subsequent introduction of IR35 in 2001, before this scheme even started.
