    Payroll software updates - how/where?

I'm using Sage Instant Payroll to run my payroll, just been on the phone to Sage support who tell me that to obtain the new 2008/2009 legislation updates I need to join their Sage support scheme for £90+VAT, and that there is no other way to get this update from Sage?? (I don't need the support, and paying £90 to get what probably amounts to a few figure changes is ridiculous).

Anyway, does anyone know of a source I can use to get either the updates, or the figures so I can manually edit myself? Had a search around but so far can't find anything.

    Cheers.

You've put your finger on the very reason I ditched Sage in April 2000.

You can manually edit the figures. What you need is a friendly type character who gets the updates from sage and will tell you what to enter

Yeah its not cheap for sage cover. But. It does save me the cost of an accountant. Get a friend to do my accounts - the bargain is that I do the year stuff (payroll etc) and give him the sage files and he tells me how much CT I pay etc.

Ok, he is an accountant but I went to Uni with him so its a fair cop.

Use Microsoft Accounting 2008 - free.

I use it for my accounts to help on the Balance Sheet reporting. I also maintain a spreadsheet in case MS do a Sage at some point in the future.

Still working out how to do the FRS in MS Accounting though.

Use www.moneysoft.co.uk for payroll - £50 per year for a far better product which is easier and quicker to use.

Do you use this software yourself, WHA? I object to using Sage but the thought of transferring 200 payrolls causes me to shake violently. If it was worthwhile, I;d do it though

You are running a 200 user payroll and you object to paying Sage £90?

The OP objected to paying Sage £90, not me. We pay about £5k per annum to Sage for all the various software we get from them.

Yes, indeed I do and very pleased I changed. We run a payroll bureau for 50 or so clients. We changed to Quickbooks a few years ago - whilst it was better than Sage it was still very cumbersome and slow and FBI was hit and miss to say the least. Two years ago after so many people recommended Moneysoft, I trialled it in the March for one client, the intention being to run all the year ends in Quickbooks and then use Moneysoft from the start of the new tax year. I was so happy with the trial - I basically replicated an entire years worth of payroll for the client in less than an hour, than I decided to do the same with all the others and spent just a couple of days replicated all our payrolls for 05/6 onto Moneysoft and then did all the year ends in less than a day, including online filing which went without a hitch. We used to spend a good two days per month doing all the payrolls, but that is now down to half a day or less. Year ends used to be a real pain but again, just done all our year ends with no problems at all. The best thing about it is that there are no period ends to faff about with - you can enter an entire years payroll for each employee from one single screen - it allows pay to be repeated for all following months and even automatically works backwards net to gross. Payroll has changed from being a loss-making pain in the butt into a profitable and enoyable sideline, all thanks to Moneysoft. And no, I'm not in any way linked to them and don't get any kickbacks - I'm happy with what they do and am happy to recommend them. Why not download the free fully functional trial - you won't regret it.
