    Expenses receipts

I just wanted to confirm that expense receipts do not need to show a VAT number if you are not claiming any VAT back.

I started my first contract last week and am not VAT registered as it is a short term contract and I thought I would wait to see how it develops first before applying for a VAT number.

    TIA.

    Correct.

Thank you. Just wanted to make sure.

As an aside, the strange thing is, this morning I specifically asked for a VAT receipt at the train station to see if it would be any different and it wasn't - it didn't have a VAT number either. Bizarre.

That's because there is no VAT element on a train fare.

Indeed - the one time I asked for a VAT receipt the geezer very sneeringly pointed out that there is no VAT on train travel - as if I ought to have known that. Thinking about it, he had a point

Of course, if you start grossing over £64k and have to VAT register you will have to account for the whole tax year. Probably a good idea to hang on to VAT receipts if that's likley to happen.

No you don't. You only need to register from the beginning of the month following the month in which you exceed the turnover threshold. So, if you start in January and you exceed t/o threshold in June, then you won't need to register until 1st July. You would probably be better backdating registration to take advantage of FRS though.

OK, I did know that - the hidden message was actually "start as you mean to go on", that way, there's no surprises. Plus, of course, the OP clearly didn't know the rules and the options but now does.

                Deep, isnt it...
