    Yep.

Time and time again, we've heard stories about (are you) local accoutants advising silly things, like paying a "market" salary, or not give the co-sec shares to split the divis, to avoid bringing attention to yourself. Basically just throwing your money away...based on some superstitution due to lack of understanding of tax.

Try and find a smaller firm that specialises in contractors or has a specialist contractor unit. That way, you get the specialist knowledge of the contractor market you need plus the personal touch you want. Also, they will have a detailed knowledge of the OMB market and will be able to apply that knowledge to your business.

It would be useful to have some examples of the specialist contractor and OMB assistance you are receiving.

You might like to have a look through the list of QA Accountants. They seem to cover the spectrum of sizes, and they all understand us.

It's not what I'm receiving - it's what I'm offering. I am an accountant, I am a partner in a reasonably sucessful firm (t/o c£500k). I now run the Contractor unit as a separate business. To keep it personal we plan on closing the books when we have 200 contractor clients.

The firm has excellent tax planning features across the client base and these are filtered into the contractor clients. Typically, such clients have higher earnings and therefore benefit from specialist planning. So, apart from the usual salary/divi split we look at how to minimise the tax impact on the business and individual running it. Its fairly difficult to generalise so we get our clients to complete a 104-point tax review and then have a tax planning meeting. We then make recommendations based on the findings.

I'm looking into the possibility of setting up a limited company and i was wanting some advice on choosing an accountant that would deal with everything. I have been recommended SJD but i was just wondering what accountants other people used and how they rate them??

                Cheers
I expressed interest to SJD, they kept hounding me. Hence I ran - fast.

Whatever accountant you go with no matter how many people recommend them make sure you check what they do, accountants can and do make mistakes.

Please do let me know personally if that is not the case.

                      But...

They keep noddying up my monthly profit/divi calculation. Once is excuseable but this has happened for me 4 times on the trot now. I know Alan watches this forum so I'm sure he will appreciate the feedback.
Interesting that you mentioned it, I normally wouldn't say anything bad against NW, their service has been exellent generally. However they made 2 mistakes recently, when I called them, they said it was because there are a few new staff. Anyway no biggie so far, but it does bother me, so I'm keeping a close eye on their account at the moment.
