How do you guys do this? Through a Ltd Co in the UK? Do you set up a Ltd Co in another country? Does IR35 apply abroad?

In general you should not work through a UK Limited. Some people do, but it is not advisable.
You can do one of: work through a specialist overseas management company, become self employed in the country, or work through the local equivalent of a limited company.
Not all options are available (or cost effective) in every country.
No IR35 doesn't apply, but some local equivalent might (especially in the Netherlands)
Where is it you were thinking of going?

I'm just browsing at the moment so don't really know but it would probably be Europe. Are there any countries that are particularly tax efficient (or inefficient)?Comment

Everywhere in the old EU (not including all the new Eastern European countries) other than Ireland and Luxembourg you will pay more tax and social security than in the UK. With the exception of the few tax havens - Andorra, Monaco, Isle of Man, Jersey, Gurnsey....
Lots of the new EU countries have introudced flat tax rates between 15 and 25%, but I don't think the contract rates are very attractive there.Last edited by NeilJ; 28 July 2005, 12:34.Comment

Switzerland is efficient, particularly short-term, you're looking at around 20%, longterm you have to pay 10% (forcibly) into a "private" pension. Good, you do get a payout when you retire, so I suppose it has a benefit.I'm alright JackComment
