Can't we have a little smile saying "please search for it" like we do for spelling?

If I can draw some parallels from some forums that I personally administrate (our World of Warcraft Forums for our Guild).

When a member joins the guild, they receive a PDF of the guild rules, how the guild works, our ranks, our policies, blah blah blah.

We also publicise the PDF on the guild website, and also in a "Welcome to the Guild" forum on our forums.

Yet, time and time again, a new member who joins, asks a few days later a question that is on the website and also in the information pack.

It's disheartening to think of the hours of work that went in to collating all the information and proactively pushing it out to the guildies, and yet, some people seem to ignore it completely or don't have the motivation to seek out the answers themselves.

Even more interesting is our recruitment web page, that says "We do not accept applications from Class X".

You would think that was obvious, wouldn't you ?

You can guess where this is going, can't you ?

Every month, Class X applies and someone (ie me) spends a few days each month writing rejection letters (politely of course).

I do try to see the best in people, but sometimes, I really do wonder if evolution can regress as well as progress.

Moderating our guild forums is a time-consuming and thankless task, and a sure fire way to develop high blood pressure. Alas, it needs to be done, to keep the guild wheels oiled.

The best thing newbies can do is to help themselves to help themselves, and make an effort to search for information. They should demonstrate that they have assimilated some of that information when asking contracting questions.
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I have to ask, does this forum really, really want to be a serious resource for new and existing contractors or more of a social forum for a few regulars - because thats how it looks from the outside.
We don't want to be anything. For me this is my virtual coffee room. I come here to rant, ask questions, listen to (and tell) jokes with my friends and colleagues.

If it looks like a social forum that's because it is, but not just for regulars. Newbies also join in the banter and are made welcome and in turn become regulars themselves.

If people want a serious resource they should go to the PCG (as I also do...)

and here's the problem. You made that judgement call. I've been contracting for 6 months now and i'm confused about alot of things.

Fortunately, I do have the time to go through alot of threads and try and piece things together. But I still don't know what the best thing to do about pensions is. Previous posts are time-sensitive because of the changing legislation.

I actually look forward to newbie, basic posts because it can confirm my beliefs in how something works (again).

                  Stop picking on newbies!!!
Sorry what newbie have I picked on for asking a silly question?

You are just complaining for the sake of it, and it is boring. You provide no examples of your alleged grievance, just bleating on and on about something which the mods have decided is simply not an issue.

If someone is to lazy to do even BASIC research for themselves, they deserve to be told to go away and do some before asking others to do it for them. Before you reply.. actually find an example.. otherwise you are just bitching for the sake of it.
