VAT / PAYE / Year End costs

After a number of problems with my accountants I am considering doing my own VAT and PAYE online as these seem relatively easy to do (one man ltd company), and get my accountant to do my CH Statutory Accounts return and Corporation tax return.

First of all is it true that I can do my own VAT and PAYE through the HMRC website?

Also, how much should it cost just to get an accountant to do my CH Statutory Accounts and Corporation tax return ?

Yes, very possible. Register under the Do it online section.

Varies, the CT tax return is the most expensive. My accountant is getting the boot after this one so will do it myself next time.

Just get him to do the CT return. The CH return requires only a balance sheet and some notes obtainable from the CH website (the word varies from year to year). So use the balance sheet that was sent with the CT return.
Down with racism. Long live miscegenation!

          Thanks for the advice.
Is there a list of forms that I need to send in to hmrc to do my own VAT and PAYE or is it as simple as registering on their "do it online" service and then filling out the web form ?

So you do your own CH return. Is this difficult? Similarly for CT? (Being a one man contractor company it must simplify things?)

The statutory accounts can be online using the PDF, where you fill in the gaps (you will need to have done P+L first), and click submit.

The main thing about accounts is understanding

                  (a) accruals of income (work done but not yet billed counts as revenue), and liabilities (tax due to be paid but not yet payable)
                  (b) depreciation (non-allowable) and the distinction between it and capital allowances (allowable)

You need to produce a P+L (use excel from the numbers from your transaction log), and a balance sheet. CT return needs accompanying sums to show how you've worked it out, i.e. income = x, allowable expenses = y, capital allowances = z. and then if your year is not april to march, you need to divide it pro rate by number of days in each period.
