I had the same thing, I rang the Vat man last week and he promised that he would deal with it there and then but I am still waiting.

Will any accountant process div's without confirmation letter? I have had verbal assurance that I've been accepted at 13%.

Not having made a note of the address that the VAT reg form went of to - is there a central contact number or is all done via regional offices like personal tax?

when I did mine, it was all regional and they don't talk to each other.

I had to apply twice because my first app went to the wrong office, the one they provided a pre paid envelope for.

The central number is 0845 010 9000, however the ofiice dealing with the applications depends on your post code.

I have to say that HMRC are not very helpful and should at least send an acknowledgement, but customer service has never been great with them.

2-3 months seems to be the norm at the moment.

Are you going to make your own VAT returns, or will your accountant?

I do mine online, which is straight forward when you are used to it. Their VAT help line (0845 010 9000) is mostly quite good tho' I've had a couple of narky types.

You have to separately enroll to make returns online. Timescales: applied to start VAT on 01-09-05 but actual start date was 13-10-05. Activation PIN for online did not arrive 'til 07-02-06!!! Activation/system help is 0845 010 8500 - again quite helpful especially for a beginner like me.

Wheels of government grind slow, but exceeding fine. You cannot escape - you are a number.
