update.....i have heard from the VAT office. They want me to send them more info about sales, business plan, contracts in place and any future contracts e.t.c.
has anyone else had this and supplied it? it seems a bit funny having to give them this info (not a problem just funny)

I've not had it, but i heard they will do that.. and that gives them another 12 weeks to delay processing your application !!
tip from accountant was to invoice with "VAT registration pending". if the client quibbles... just explain that your VAT registration pre-dates the contract, and so you cannot legally charge them without VAT (well you can, but then you have to give up 17.5% of what they do give u..). Most agencies wont get paid by the end client if you havent submitted timesheets or invoices.. so you've got a bit of ammo as they cant get paid either until they agree to pay you and get the VAT number after..
the other idea suggested was to invoice "inclusive of VAT", but not give a breakdown, and then give them an updated invoice with the breakdown once you get the VAT number..
I'm also waiting and it looks like tis going to be another 8 weeks of delay for me... unless agency coughs up!
p.s. anyone found a way to expedite a quicker processing of application? tried the complaints line, and they could only offer sympathy and explain what a predicament they had been put in when new credit checks were insisted upon.... and the worst thing is they havent put in a recovery plan yet... so still only the same number of staff at each VAT office :-(
p.p.s Shame VAT numbers cant be bought and sold via ebay etc! ;-)

This happened to me, too. Yes, I supplied the extra info.

Oh isn't bureaucracy fun, tra la.
Budgie
Criminals have been ripping off the VAT system to the tune of £billions over the last few years. In the eyes of this government it is only right that we pay more to fill the gap.

I've been through this s*it with the vountary registration for a new company... asking for bollocks more info ad nauseum - in the end I withdrew the application & will resubmit once the VAT threshold approaches.
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think
me wonders if each regional vat office is processing applications at different speed... any1 know if its only certain regional offices that are flooded ?
annoying, the guy spoke 2 in 'complaints' elucidated that there is no plan in place to clear backlog-- only an aspiration to plan to clear it. bah !?

Do not forget that this is a public body doing this work. They have no customer service ethos.
