Claiming for Business Clothing Against TAX

Good Morning all,

Just a quick question with regards to business clothing. I've heard that you can claim the cost of clothing that is specificly for business use. The problem is that anything that could still be used for other purposes doesn't fall in to this bracket.

Do any of you know a way of getting round this as I would really like some new shirts etc.

Sew your company logo onto it and call it a uniform.

You could always wear a company boiler suit, or maybe a white lab coat.

Generally this is not available, as has been said a unifirm showing the company name etc could be possible but doubtful for contractors.

Shame. I've always liked the idea of having a company uniform. Perhaps something in black with safety boots.

I wear my own company uniform

The current place gave me an option of:

a) a suit
b) thier warehouse gear or;
c) my own uniform

Have some nice comfy trousers and a shirt embrodered with the name.

Didnt want to wear a suit as I was working with warehouse types and didnt want to wear thier uniform from an IR35 point of view.

I recall a few years ago there was a woman lawyer who claimed she had to wear black or dark clothing when in court and claimed it as a business expense as she would never wear such clothing outside of work - and therefore considered it an expense incurred solely as a result of her being a lawyer.

She went to court over it - and lost!

The variant I heard (dunno if it's accurate) was that it was her gown and wig as a barrister she was claiming for and lost because she might wear it to a fancy dress party.
