What is the legal requirement for keeping files, paperwork, documents, etc. from a tax point of view - is it 6 years from the end of the particular financial year the documents refer to?

Ive just chucked out everything up until April 2004.
Why? Because they were getting in my way. 60 Ring Binders full to the rafters of tulip!!
