Contract Position Offered - Working remotely from the UK

I currently live in the EU, but not in the UK. I've left 2 years ago. I've been offered a position to work remotely, but they want me to be a tax resident in the United Kingdom. I'd also have to operate through a UK Limited Company.

The position is fully remote and they have no problem with me being regularly in my home country or even doing the work anywhere else.

What would be the simplest/cheapest way to become a UK tax resident?

Actually there is no such thing as "tax residency". What they probably mean is that you pay tax on your UK income. However there is a problem if you work in another EU country remotely this income is not UK income and is not taxable in the UK. Basically you pay tax on income in the country you actually work.

If they do not allow you to work remotely and work through a company or as self-employed in the country you'll be working in, i.e. not pay UK tax I would turn it down. It isn't worth the risk. The tax authorities in the country you're living in won't simply accept that you're living there and paying UK tax, they're inevitably going to enquire at some point.

One option might be to setup a UK Ltd company, you bill them through that and then charge from a company in the EU country you're working in to the UK Ltd. That way the tax will be paid in the EU country. If you travel over occasionally you can justify a small amount of taxable income through the UK Ltd. The potential exception would be if the OP lives in Ireland near enough the border. E.g. if you lived in Dublin, you could probably get a cheap co-working space in Newry to use now and again and "get away with" working at home at other times.
