The two are not mutually exclusive. There are too many who fail to realise that.
In my case, I'd hope no one would disagree. Unlike most of you, I have four fee-earning employees and three very part-time subcontractors. In dead times, my fees from my contracts help to pay employee salaries. In good times, their fees give me a nice boost. That's running a business.
You know what's stupid? I still have to worry about IR35. If I had a contract that technically could be ruled inside IR35, and I ended up using the funds from it to pay employee salaries, they could still hold me liable for tax on a deemed payment. That's really, really stupid. So I have to have cover for that, and get contracts reviewed, etc.Comment
