I might add I'm usually involved in fixing consultancy feck ups, or training their so called highly skilled staff.

The best bit is to then watch them blow out the consultancy
    game altogether and turn contractor.

I've had a few successes over the years with that

Last year I had a contract cancelled 4 days before I was due to start.

Client co paid me for a week as an apology, probably as they use a lot of contractors.
(Agent could have received 2 weeks, I'll never know!)

I worked with a contractor once who got fired as he wasn't very good, and they paid him 2 weeks notice.

"Cool story bro" I guess, but these type of payments can happen.

I've been paid in the past due to a contract being cancelled and know others who have. I've also got SFA in the past when a contract has been cancelled.

It really depends on what's in the contract but you shouldn't expect to be paid. If you are treat it as a bonus.
