What if you're accountant is crap?

    Hi all

I have been using an accountant that has been recommended on this board. The accountant has been good for providing payroll services, but when I ask them for specific advice, they're not getting back to me.

Is there anything I can do in this situation?

    Thanks

    Two things really.

    1. Tell them that you are not happy with the level of response to your queries. Until they know you are unhappy, they can't do anything about it.

    2. If, after letting them know you are not happy nothing changes, find a new accountant. Generally speaking changing an accountant at your Ltd's year end is cheaper, but you should not let that tie your hands if you are genuinely unhappy.

I used www.mmti.co.uk. Even after I stopped using his services (for reasons unrelated to him), he still advises me when I need help.

        Top guy, definately recommended.

That's good to hear. It's a shame that some co.s don't realise how much damage crap customer care costs in the long term.

It is not worth putting up with poor service. We have come across some cowboys in our time when we have taken over new clients and you need to realise that your own peace of mind is worth more than that.

125 a month (or whatever they charge nowadays) isn't very much really. Given that a good permie accountant will be on a salary in the range of 30-40K (and I'm guessing based on people I know so I could be out here)

They'll have offices, website, advertising and secretarial costs, not to mention profit, directors salaries and the like, suddenly you realise that to make any real profit at these prices you need a lot of customers if you have a lot of customers you need to standardise the service.

What you can't have is a cheap tailored service that is good, you will only ever get two of these three things at any one time (and then only if you're lucky)

As with anything you get what you pay for. If you want more, talk to them about how you can reward them for the extra you ask them to do.
