I suppose I should follow this up with an obligatory plug for FreeAgent which will not only let you manage your own books easily, but it will both fill out and submit your VAT returns for you with a few clicks.

Yes, I agree with you in principle however, at the moment my #1 priority is reducing my costs as far as possible by doing my own VAT and payroll since I've been out of work so long and the work now coming in is only short term stuff and at lower rates than ever before.

Fair enough, though IIRC it's £25/month so not too bad and it will do your payroll for you too. It will do your self assessment as well. I can give you a referral code if you want to try it out and get 10% off.

Thanks, if the work picks up and minimising costs gets a bit less important, I will go that way.

Although costs more than the £120 saving
