Not everyone is required to follow how you run your company.
Freeagent tends to come as a freebie from the accountant and accountants offering freeagent tend to be a little cheaper due to the time saved so not sure where unnecessary cost form... and when you are talking 100's of K of your money a couple of quid to get people like the OP out of the crap he's in would have been an absolute bargain.

Not sure why you are taking the slightly aggressive stance here. Stick around for a couple of years and see the numpties that get themselves in the crap on here. The one and only thing they need to do or should have done earlier is get a good accountant from recommendations on here. I'm not asking them to do it like I do mine, I'm giving advice and recommendations that I believe will help the OP. I've had the one man band cock my accounts up so moved to SJD and then I moved away when their service got bad (as many have done). The new set up I've got so far is the best I've had by far (although I did like the SJD service when it worked well, it's just very expensive now).

They can run their company how they want, but when people are in the crap like this guy I'll give him a recommendation how to fix it and explain why. Isn't that the point of the forum?

Define "best". A poor accountant using the "best" tools will not prevent you from getting into a mess. A good accountant will be a good accountant regardeless of the software that they use.
So why not get a good accountant with the best tool and you are sorted. Many of us on here recommend Freeagent and many of us on here recommend a number of accountants. It's not just me, it's the forum trying to be helpful based on our collective experiences. A very powerful recommendation no?

I've had a good accountant who didn't need to use freeagent or any cloud based tool - I did the vat return and they took a box of receipts at the end of the year and did the accounts. I've had a good accountant who didn't need to use freeagent but had their own portal to use instead. I've done the trial version of Crunch but didn't like it.

Makes sense to take control with the most appropriate tool - not one that some random bloke on the internet says that I should use to run my business thanks.
Me and you are going to get on well I think

So a good accountant at InTouch, or Nixon Willians, or Crunch etc. is no good because they don't use the software that you say is the best.

      Glad you cleared that up.

They have their own portals of which I have no experience but portals none the less. I've a long history of recommending InTouch and NW if you have a look around or check my accountant recommendation posts.

I am just trying to help these OP using my experiences.

Any chance you can post something that would help him rather than acting like a ******* pillock?

I could always ask if they have asked their accountant

Hello, :-) thanks for your responses.

My current accountants are not contractor specialists. They are the same local firm that is used by my Dad so thought it'd be good to use them as well.

I have emailed my accountants and requested them to put in writing what my prev accts missed out. And asked why they didn't chase, or ask me to chase, and why they failed to advise me of the extra costs up until now. I've not signed any contract so hoping I can argue my case. As they have said 6-months clear-up will cost flat rate monthly fee (and I'm paying over the odds for the service - £165pm!). I have lined up another accountant who will save me £65pm. And asked them to provide total service time to cleanup the 6months. As the bulk of the work for this period i.e. working out tax/ni/vat/salary was already calculated by previous accts. And shouldn't/can't ask for the full flat rate.

And again... How did you select the new accountant?

Hi, its the same accountant my dad uses for his work therefore, I had an initial meeting with the acct's and explained my line of work, rates etc and then went forward with these guys.

                    Is your Dad a contractor?
