    VAT Flat Rate Scheme Category

    Hi everyone,

I'm signing up for the Flat Rate Scheme, put simply my work involves configuring computer equipment to work on new networks, testing it and overseeing the transformation. My first thought was 'Computer and IT consultancy or data processing' but as the project is already planned I'm not being consulted in anyway shape or form. So would I be right in thinking that 'Any other activity that is not listed elsewhere' would be correct.

    Thanks

You are supplying expertise to the client whatever it is so it's consultancy... The any other activity one is incorrect.

If you are with an accountant that specialises in contractors they will be familiar with what you do and should be able to advise as well.

There's a level of infuriating ambiguity here. Many contractors try to insist that there's no definition tight enough in the 14.5% band and want therefore to be be "services not classified elsewhere" (sic) at 12%. The fact that we know enough about HMRC not accepting this often isn't sufficient.

Contractors or newly started out permietractors?

The latter I guess. But not always.

It isn't a question about your current project/contract, it's a question about the services your business has performed, continues to perform, and will perform in future, in the round. You can't use a single project/contract to secure what you may see as a more favourable category. There's a relevant article here:

Thanks for assuming I'm after the extra 2.5% but I'm actually trying to choose the right category so I don't get into trouble later on... don't be so skeptical... anyway thanks for the advice, guess I was right the first time before I started over thinking it.

if you want to minimise the risk of getting in trouble later on choose the highest %
