Accounting Software for an IT Consulting Company

Hi everyone,

Me and a friend of mine were thinking of starting an IT conlsuting firm. We were wondering what accounting software would be best suited for a small sized firm. We are looking for a free accounting software that will handle invoicing, manage documents, and keep track of every transaction held in the business.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I'd recommend you get a good spell checker as well....

Try Freeagent. Or if you're more sophisticated, Xero.

If you are looking a free software for basic accounting, start with Wave. However, I would recommend QuickBooks software because it does have more accounting features rather than any other software.

Thanks for the replies, I think I'm going to check out Wave. Finding a free software is definitely a priority for me since I don't want to allocate too much expenses on software. Based on my research I found another free Canadian software called SlickPie. Anyone have experience with it? I think I'm going to try them both out and hopefully I like at least one of them.

I'm sure the Canadian finance tool for your UK company will be fine. At least you'll get what you pay for.

The last I heard about Wave was that it was a Canadian/US product that had been adapted to work in the UK, so there were issues around terminology etc., and more importantly, as it was written to deal with US sales tax rather than UK VAT, it's functionality re VAT was compromised, i.e. didn't handle UK VAT flat rate scheme nor able to cope with the differences between the VAT cash basis or accruals basis. It's a while since I trialled it, but I wasn't impressed, especially when you can get perfectly good basic UK specific online software for less than a tenner a month!

Both do not support UK accounting, best to go with an accountant who offers free online software, which meets your needs. If you are thinking of forming a UK company, you also need to think about VAT, PAYE, Tax etc. Best speak to your accountant before signing up to any of these softwares..

You've got two people doing IT consultancy for one company, yet you're scrimping on a few quid on accounting software? Doesn't sound like a sensible decision to me.
